Good looks, smartness and a hunky physique could get you all the attention you need from the fairer sex. But if you are lucky and happen to share your birthday with that special someone, chances are that you’ll strike a friendship instantly. In fact, it has been proven that sharing a birthday can even lead to a dreamy-eyed young lass falling for you.Subha Sundar Ram, a third-year journalism student who shares her birthday with one of her classmates, agrees. She recalls one such incident. “There is this girl from Malaysia. She proposed to one of my friends who met her on a trip to Malaysia,” Subha narrates. “When that boy asked her why she loves him, she replied, ‘We share the same birthday, that’s why. I want to get married to you on my birthday. It would be so much fun celebrating our marriage anniversary and birthdays on the same day together.” “The girl is still hounding the poor chap, while the latter has promised that he will never travel to Malaysia again,” she adds. However, for Subha, she has never celebrated her birthday together with her classmate Tenzin, who shares her date of birth, although she admits that sharing a birthday has brought them closer. “In the first year, we celebrated it separately with our group of friends. But in the last two years, as our college reopened after our birthdays, we wished each other only through Facebook. Knowing that we are born on the same day has really strengthened our friendship,” she says.Tenzin, her friend, adds, “It’s really good to share a birthday with someone you know. It enhances the bond you have with that person, as he/she or goes through the same feelings and emotions on that special day.”So, imagine a case of twins, who share almost everything, from looks, to voice, and sometimes to even the haircuts and dress. For Ramya and her twin sister Suganya, their birthdays are the most looked forward to event in the calendar. “This is an occasion when unlike normal days, we dress alike — from clothes to the accessories. However, we wear clothes of different colours on that day,” says Ramya. “We cut only one cake, which has both our names written on it. The cake has two candles, one for each of us. It’s so much fun. And on top of that, we also get only one common chocolate box,” she laughs. But there are also others whose birthdays fall on important landmark dates such as August 15 or October 2 and they say this is what makes their birthdays special. V Kalyanam, personal secretary of Mahatma Gandhi, was born on August 15. When asked about his age, during a recent interview to City Express, the freedom fighter had jokingly tried to hide his correct age. “You can write I’m above 50 or 60,” he said. As an afterthought, he added, “Do you want to know my date of birth? It’s August 15, 1922.” As people looked at him in amazement, Kalyanam said proudly, “My birthday is celebrated by all the people of India!”[email protected]
