Jackals on Perungudi prowl

Three Indian jackals created a scare among residents of Telephone Nagar, Perungudi, after they strayed into the area.

One of the jackals injured a 21-year-old man on Sunday. The man reportedly pelted stones at the animals taking them to be stray dogs when one jackal pounced on him. Forest officials said even as residents made attempts to chase it away, the Indian Jackal, which is protected under Schedule I of the Wildlife Protection Act, died after it ran into burning garbage.

Forest officials said Santhosh (21), an export company employee from Telephone Nagar, Perungudi, was playing cricket with his friends on Sunday evening and, in between, he went to a garbage dump area surrounded by thick bushes to relieve himself. Suddenly, he saw three animals staring at him. Taking them to be stray dogs, he pelted stones at them. While two jackals ran into the thicket, one pounced on him and bit him on the right side of his neck, besides leaving minor injuries on his face, officials said.

Residents rushed to the spot to rescue the man and attempted to chase the jackal away by throwing clubs and stones at it. The jackal jumped to avoid the stones hurled at it and accidentally fell on a heap of garbage that was burning, officials said. Meanwhile, frightened women at home closed the entrances to their houses fearing the presence of the other two jackals. “The jackal had sustained injuries and could have died of the shock. We have registered a case and have begun investigations. Jackals could have come from the forest area located nearby,” said S Davidraj, Forest Range Officer, Velachery Range Office. Forest officials recovered its carcass and buried it. Santhosh was taken to a hospital for treatment.
