Jackky Bhagnani in 'Youngistaan': The similarities with Rahul Gandhi are too strong to ignore, but we'll have to wait and see whom he plays
Jackky Bhagnani plays a young politician in 'Youngistaan', and many think his role is modeled on Rahul Gandhi.

New Delhi: If you thought Bollywood was only about romantic melodramas, you are grossly mistaken. For politics, which offers an interesting mix of drama, comedy, power, and cynicism, has invariably been one of the favourite themes of Hindi cinema. Even though politics is a sensitive subject as it involves commoner's beliefs on how a country should function, how things should always work in the favour of the citizens and most importantly, who should run the nation, it continues to be a hit with the movie buffs and the filmmakers alike.

And with the Parliamentary elections looming large, Bollywood directors are trying their best to incorporate political theme in their projects. The year 2014 kicked off with the release of Salman Khan's 'Jai Ho' which reflects the nation's current political scenario, followed by Juhi Chawla wowing everyone with the portrayal of a conniving politician in 'Gulaab Gang' and a string of political films waiting to be released in the upcoming months. Interestingly, two of the four movies - 'O Teri' and 'Youngistaan' that release tomorrow also have political plotlines.

Even though Jackky Bhagnani plays a young politician in 'Youngistaan', the actor has denied his role being modeled on Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi. But the similarities between him and Rahul are spot on. From something as basic as how Jackky waves at the masses, addresses the public, the way he walks, talks and wears clothes, every detail has been paid great attention to and looks so real. "You may find the similarity in the looks, but I am not portraying Rahul Gandhi in the film," Jackky insists in one of his recent interviews. But is that enough to believe that the actor doesn't bear any resemblance with Rahul? Nah!

So what's his look like? Well, those who came in late, the film's promos show how Jackky has gone all out to recreate the popular young politicians, nailing the stubble and glasses. And the fact that Jacky is seen wearing kurta-pyjama and Nehru jacket, and not donning the typical 'sarkari babu look', the resemblance between him and Rahul is bang on.

As reports suggest, Jackky also drew inspiration from several real-life instances. In one of his recent interviews, the actor admitted to following several political leaders to study what he should and shouldn't be doing. So while the actor was busy focusing on the behavioral patterns, Leepakshi Ellawadi, who has designed his costumes for the film, was busy tracking the wardrobes of Rahul Gandhi, Omar Abdullah and Jyotiraditya Scindia at key events like public appearances, campaigns, social events etc. His look isn't harsh, which helps him leaves a softer impact, all thanks to the designer who has dressed him young and added colours to the wardrobe.

Agreed, Jaccky Bhagnani has been making headlines for his look and role in the film, but just like politicians aren't judged by the look, but by their work, what's important is if the actor's performance will strike a chord with the masses and win him plaudits.####
