Congress Spokesman Abhishek Singhvi advised Jaswant Singh to stop doing drama and try to fool the nation.

New Delhi: The Congress on Tuesday said that it had taken a long time for former external affairs Minister Jaswant Singh to accept that the Gujarat riots and Babri Masjid demolition were "blots" for the BJP, but termed the disclosures made in his book the party's "hypocrisy meant to befool the people."

"If what has been stated in Jaswant Singh's book that the Gujarat administration was guilty of failures and weaknesses, then why was there hesitation in naming Chief Minister Narendra Modi as the main culprit of the communal riots in Gujarat," Congress Spokesman Abhishek Singhvi said at a briefing in the Parliament House.

"Mr Modi was guilty of many omissions and commissions but he had not been held responsible for the communal riots in the book," he noted.

Citing the book, Singhvi said at one place it was stated that L K Advani felt hurt by the demolition of Babri Masjid, but noted that he had kept standing there till the structure collapsed.

"Similarly then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee called upon Mr Modi to follow Rajdharma, and then went to sleep," Singhvi added.

"Such doublespeak has been cultivated as a fine art by Mr Vajpayee, Mr Advani and Mr Jaswant Singh but they forget each time such deception is practiced, that they they get exposed," he said, calling on the BJP and Mr Singh to "stop speaking and writing a book and take Mr Modi to task."

"Instead of writing a book and pushing its sales, stop doing drama and trying to fool the nation," Mr Singhvi advised the former external affairs Minister.
