CHENNAI: Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa on Thursday constituted a four-member expert panel to go into safety features of the Koodankulam Nuclear Power Project and consider the apprehensions of the local people.Former Atomic Energy Commission chief M R Srinivasan, Prof D Arivoli and Prof S Iniyan from Anna University’s Physics department and Energy Studies Institute respectively are panel members, along with former IAS officer L N Vijayaraghavan who retired in the chief secretary cadre.Iniyan would be the organiser of the panel and the committee would submit its report to the State government, an official release here by chief secretary Debendranath Sarangi said.Last week, Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa announced in the State Assembly that a panel would be set up to study the safety of the KKNPP plant besides looking into the concerns of the people.Srinivasan, a renowned nuclear scientist and former chairman of Atomic Energy Commission, is also a former member (energy) of the planning commission. From Fission to Fusion: The story of India’s Atomic Energy Programme authored by Srinivasan is noteworthy. S Iniyan is an expert in energy planning and policy. As head of Institute of Energy Studies, Anna University, he was instrumental in bringing collaborative energy projects to the varsity from countries including Australia. D Arivoli, a noted physicist, is editorial board member of International Journal of Biosciences and Technology, and. a reviewer for Nanotechnology and Journal of Physics among other publications. L N Vijayaraghavan, a retired 1972-batch IAS officer, has held various positions in the government including that of Member secretary, State Planning Commission.Speaking to Express, S Iniyan, said the committee would begin the exercise soon and file its report shortly.
