Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa on Monday directed the authorities to immediately file a petition in the Supreme Court seeking a direction to Karnataka to release the due share of Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu.

The Chief Minister gave this direction after chairing a detailed review meeting in this regard at the Secretariat here. During the Cauvery River Authority (CRA) meeting at New Delhi on September 19 convened by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, the Chief Minister had explained Tamil Nadu’s position on the need for irrigating standing Samba crops and sought a direction to the Karnataka government to release at least 2 tmc ft of water per day for 24 days as per the distress sharing formula.  However, the Prime Minister,  who is also the CRA chairman, directed Karnataka to release 9,000 cusecs (3/4 tmc) of water from September 20 to October 15 to Tamil Nadu.

“Though the Prime Minister’s decision was not acceptable to Tamil Nadu, the Karnataka government had rejected it,“ an official release here said.

In this backdrop, Jayalalithaa reviewed the situation and directed the officials to immediately file a petition before the Supreme Court seeking a direction to the Karnataka government to release the due share of Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu.
