Srinagar: Fierce clashes continued between locals and security personnel in the Nowgam area near Srinagar over the death of two civilians in Army firing. Grief-stricken relatives of the two young victims alleged they were killed at a checkpost without any provocation.
The Indian Army says it opened fire at a car, the teenagers were travelling in, after it failed to stop at three checkposts.
The Indian Army on Tuesday begun its inquiry after two civilians were killed in its firing on Monday in Jammu and Kashmir's Budgam district. The Army has launched investigations by recording of statements of the troops on duty to reconstruct the sequence of events.
"The inquiry has been ordered. A senior officer has been appointed to do inquiry to speed up process of investigation. Inquiry is looking into the angle that there is no re-occurrence of such incidents in future," said GOC 15 Corps Subrata Saha.
Preliminary investigations suggested there was nothing incriminating in the car or on the bodies of the two victims. Reacting to the situation, Union Defence Minister Arun Jaitley has assured appropriate action.
With elections just weeks away in Kashmir, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said the incident will vitiate the atmosphere. "Party appealed to the Election Commision to order a time bound probe. We want to see whether the SOPs were violated and want the guilty to be punished. We want truth to come out." said the ruling National Conference's spokesperson Junaid Mattoo.
There is a deep sense of anger and pain over the killing of the two teenagers and people don't have enough faith on the probes ordered by the government.
