New Delhi: Following the orders of Jammu and Kashmir High Court, the state crime branch on Wednesday constituted a nine-member team to probe the allegations of sexual exploitation of policewomen and corruption against a police official.
Justice Bashir Ahmad Kirmani had taken strong exception to the lack of concern by senior police officials over the matter and had directed the crime branch to investigate the criminal aspects of the case.
"I have constituted a nine-man team headed by an additional superintendent of police which will investigate the criminal allegations of corruption and sexual abuse," Senior Superintendent of Police, Crime Brach, Muneer Khan was quoted by PTI as saying.
Muneer Khan has also been directed to furnish his report to the Chief Judicial Magistrate, Srinagar, who will monitor the investigations and inform the High Court.
He said a case has been lodged against former Assistant Sub-Inspector of police Feroze Ahmad Najar, who during his tenure as incharge of deployment of woman constables had allegedly sexually exploited them.
Najar was demoted to the rank of a constable after a departmental inquiry found him guilty and a case had been registered following directions of the state High Court.
The inquiry states that Najar, who was in-charge of deployment of women police contingent, had sexually abused woman constables and charged money for keeping them off duty depending on the period they wanted to avail as free holidays.
"In the totality of the circumstances, facts, audio and documentary evidence available, the charges of corruption and sexual abuse are established against ASI Feroze Ahmad," the inquiry officer was quoted by PTI as saying.
A lady constable, Shahnaz Akhter had blown the lid off the alleged sexual exploitation. Akhter told the the inquiry officer that Najar would ask her to identify beautiful girls so that he would exploit them sexually.
She added that she barely managed to escape from his clutches. On another occasion, Akhter said Najar had taken one of the lady constables to the house of a constable at Bemina.
