CHENNAI: More than 10,000 students from 30 colleges in the State will benefit from the Confederation of Indian Industry’s Employability Bridge initiative, which will ensure quality education and bridge the gap between industry and academia, according to N K Ranganath, Chairman, CII Tamil Nadu State Council.Ranganath said the initiative will also include about 100 companies in the State this academic year. CII is also planning to target the entire south before launching a pan India initiative, he added.The initiative is a platform for synergising efforts from various stakeholders including industry, academia and students, to address the skill requirement and availability of the industry, he said.Ranganath said the CII has signed MoU’s with six colleges and 12 companies in the first phase. “We will be having 30 colleges and 100 companies by the end of this academic year,” he said.Although the focus will be on IT, the thrust will also be on the manufacturing sector. “After 2008 economic crisis, IT does not have the same value, but still is the largest employable sector,” he said.Interestingly, CII is also planning to target Tier-II and Tier-III cities in a bid to extend the reach of CII member companies to the talent pool available in these cities. “We want to create awareness about the requirement of the industry to these students, besides enhancing their career opportunities as well as helping them participate in paper contests,” said Ranganath. The focus will be on engineering, arts and science as well as management courses, he added. The cost of the training is shared between the student, the industry and the academic institute. The student will also pay an annual subscription of `1,500. The skills training include students getting access to the e-learning modules, online aptitude labs and certification from CII Employability Bridge, besides internship in the industry, said Ambalavanan Ramachandran, director of SurgeForth Technologies, the programme management partner for this initiative.
