KENDRAPARA: The elephant, which was injured in Desahi on Sunday, is responding to medication and reportedly out of danger now. Its mahout was electrocuted while riding the elephant in Desahi village under Aul block on Sunday. A team of veterinary doctors from Nandankanan zoo had rushed to Desahi to treat the injured elephant. It was injured when its mahout accidentally came in contact with a live wire while moving in the village street on the elephant. The mahout was identified as Jayanath Nanda of Nazaprpur in Uttar Pradesh.Another mahout has been given charge of the elephant, said Rajnagar forest officer  Binod Acharya. Meanwhile, the incident has drawn flak from the animal rights activists in Kendrapara.  “It is already against the law to bring these animals into villages for collection of alms, but that rarely seems to be enforced and even if it is, the fine is so small and elephant owners can easily afford to pay it,” said Sudhanshu Parida,  secretary of the district unit of People for Animals (PFA).
