KOLLAM: After a year behind bars, Kalpana, 26, and her one-and-a-half-year-old son Suriya will finally breathe fresh air on Tuesday. She was all tears after the district and sessions court on Monday ruled to let her off in a case registered by the Oachira Police, as there was not enough evidence to establish the charges against her.In her hands was little Suriya who seemed to share his mother’s joy. The mother and son will be freed from the Attakulangara Women’s Jail on Tuesday following the court order.Kalpana was the fourth accused in a case registered by Oachira Police for sexually abusing a 13-year-old girl in Oachira. She originally hails from Palakkad and had been staying near the Oachira temple along with her brother. The case was registered on March 26, 2011 following a statement given by a girl, who lived in the locality and was an acquaintance of Kalpana, to the Child Welfare committee. There was no one to seek bail for the mother and the child, as her brother was also arrested by the police and was charged as the third accused.Ironically, the first and second accused remained at large. The defence counsel was represented by noted Human Rights activists Mohammed Humayoon, Karunagappally V Madhu and Jolly Alex. They pointed out various anomalies in the FIR and statements, following which the court dismissed the case. After the court verdict, Kalpana said that hoped that one day justice would be delivered to her. “I will leave for Palakkad along with my brother. We have some distant relatives in Palakkad,” she said.Kalpana had been working as a temporary house maid and fish vendor in Oachira. Mohammed Humayoon said that it was so disheartening to know that such an innocent kid had to serve jail sentence for one year.
