Shocking incidents of attempts to kill female babies by stopping breast feeding and to sell infants to unauthorised destitute homes have surfaced again in Konchavaram of Chincholi taluk.
A visit to Onti Chinta Thanda, Onti Gudsi Thanda, Bhikku Naik Thanda and Chandu Naik Thanda, in Konchavaram Gram Panchyat brought the situation to light.
Two days ago, a few families in Onti Gudsi and Onti Chinta Thanda tried to kill and sell their newborn girl babies.
Kavita, wife of Tarasingh, from Onti Gudsi Thanda, said she and her family were planning to hand over their 20-day-old baby girl to an unauthorised destitute home. When the matter came to police’s notice, they warned the family they would be remanded in judicial custody, if they did so.
Kavita questioned, “Tell us how we should look after this baby? I already have three daughters and she is the fourth one. We do not have any land or permanent work. How can we afford dowry for their wedding?”
When asked why she did not undergo an operation for birth control, Kavita said until she gave birth to a baby boy, she would not undergo the operation. Fearing arrest, the family has dropped the idea of giving the baby to a destitute home.
Another woman, Kavita, wife of Vithal Rathod of Onti Chita Thanda, admitted that she did not breast feed her one-and-a-half month-old baby girl.
Police visited the family and warned to book a case against them, if the baby died of malnutrition.
Though Deputy Director of Women and Children Ratna Kalamdani has advised to hand over the babies to government-owned destitute home ‘Amulya,’ these lambani families sell the babies.
