Karnataka Pradesh Mahila Congress president Laxmi R Hebbalkar allegedly tried to use her political position to secure the release of 15 sand-laden trucks seized by police during banned hours in Belgaum.
Hebbalkar was allegedly heard questioning a police officer Udappa Kattikar on phone for intercepting the trucks. She also 'ordered' him to meet her immediately over the issue, which he refused.
Police sources said 14 trucks were released as they had proper documents but one of the trucks didn't have documents. It was released only after the truck owner was asked to pay a fine of Rs 50,000.
Meanwhile, before the truck was released Hebbalkar reportedly called Kattikar on his cellphone and slammed him for seizing the trucks claiming they had requisite permits.
She also allegedly questioned why the trucks were not released.
The officer said that he was only doing his duty and he intercepted the trucks because it was transporting sands during banned hours.
Rubbishing reports that she tried to misuse her political power, Hebbalkar said, "It was not a case of illegal mining. All the trucks were from my constituency and I called up the PSI to know why the trucks were seized without any permission. The policeman told me that he has oral instruction. We are in public service and I am committed to safeguard the interest of my people."
