Kerala Rape-Murder: Police Question Key Suspect, No Arrest Yet
Police sources told CNN-News18 that the accused has a history of being charged in drug-related cases.

In the latest development in the alleged rape and murder case of 30-year-old Dalit woman, Kerala Police on Wednesday said that the key accused is being questioned in the case. Police sources told CNN-News18 that the accused has a history of being charged in drug-related cases.

The incident that took place in Ernakulam on April 28 has sparked protests across the poll-bound stat, with the opposition alleging breakdown of law and order under the Oommen Chandy government.

The issue was also raised in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday by CPM member MB Rajesh, who alleged that the police had failed in the probe as it did not act swiftly.

Meanwhile, Chandy on Wednesday visited Perumbavoor and assured assistance to the family of the victim. He said that the government will provide all aid to the family if the election commission permits. He has also promised jobs to the victim's family.

The victim's family said they were being targeted by their neighbours, who wanted them to shift from the place.

Police suspect the killer was someone known to the victim as they have not found signs of any forced entry into the house.

The law student, who hailed from a poor family, was subjected to rape and brutal assault using sharp edged weapons before being murdered at her house in Perumbavoor on April 28. She was found dead in a pool of blood at her one room home at 8 PM on the same day by her mother when she returned from work.

Police have been questioning three suspects, of which two are the victim's neighbours and one is a close relative.

Ernakulam Range IG Mahipal Yadav had said there were signs of strangulation, smothering and 13 injuries on the woman's neck, chest and at several other places of the body. Some reports said there were around 20 injuries and that the victim's intestines were pulled out.

The crime has chilling similarities with the Nirbhaya case that took place in Delhi where a young Delhi student was gangraped in a moving bus in 2012. The girl later succumbed to her injuries.
