THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Going ahead with its resolve to construct a new dam at Mullaperiyar in place of the existing one, Kerala government would submit a detailed project report (DPR) on the proposed new dam to Supreme Court appointed Empowered Committee on Mullaperiyar on September 29.The state would also submit three recommendations on how to drain off the water in the existing dam before it was demolished, Water Resources Minister P J Joseph told reporters here today after a high level meeting that discussed Mullaperiyar issue.The time frame given by the Committee to submit the DPR expires on September 30. The report would be submitted in New Delhi. Estimated cost of the new dam was Rs 666 crore, he said.Technique of siphoning water from the existing dam to the new dam, pumping water through the spill-way and demolished baby-dam to drain off the water in the existing dam were the suggestions made by the government, he said.Kerala and Tamil Nadu are on logerheads over Mullaperiyar Reservoir with the former wanted to construct new dam citing safety reasons while Tamil Nadu oppose the move holding that it might deprive of them with water to irrigate many areas in their state.
