CHENNAI: Batting for the commissioning of the Koodankulam Nuclear Power Plant, former chief minister and DMK leader M Karunanidhi on Wednesday observed that the atomic power plant in Kalpakkam has been functioning without any problems for several years.Addressing a gathering here during the birthday celebrations of DMK treasurer M K Stalin, he said that the Kalpakkam Atomic Power plant, has not caused any disaster as claimed by those protesting against the nuclear plant at Koodankulam.“We have allowed the plant along the Kalpakkam coast near Chennai. But till date, it is generating power without problems,” he said.Pointing out that Tamil Nadu was struggling under severe power crisis, he charged that the State was supporting the anti-nuclear protestors. He said, “...It appears that the government is maintaining a stoic silence over the issue.” The government must clarify whether it is in favour of the protestors or not, he urged.Karunanidhi also alleged that the government has shied away from the responsibility of allaying the fears among the locals.“Had the State extended help to engineers and scientists to generate electricity, it would have solved the existing acute power shortage we are experiencing,” he observed.
