Fish prices here have increased drastically in the last 10 days due to the ongoing protest at Koodankulam. Traders attribute the rise in rates to poor supply from coastal areas to the city.
According to M B Subair, Secretary Coimbatore district fish Traders welfare association, “Usually the city gets supply from Thoothukudi, Nagapattinam, Rameswaram and Kanyakumari. But during the last 10 days the supply from these areas has come down drastically due to the ongoing protest in Koodankulam, where fishermen have kept away from the sea.”
The arrivals of most sought after Spanish mackerel (Vanchiram) has reduced by more than half at Ukkadam market. “Generally we receive around 800 kf to 1,200 kg of Spanish mackerel (Vanchiram) but we are getting around 300 kg now,” said Subair
Similarly there is a significant fall in the supply of sea bass (Koduvai) eel (Vilongu) anchovy (Neththali) also.
“Now look towards Kerala to offset the fall in the supply. Kozhikode, Kochi and Mangalore are the major suppliers to city markets,” he said
The rates of the Spanish mackerel (Vanchiram) Anchovy (Neththali) sea bass (Koduvai), Eel (Vilongu), Red Snapper (Sankara) have increased considerably due to the low availability.
