La Martiniere boy victim of punishment: report
Rampant corporal punishment at top Kolkata school, says child rights group.

Kolkata: Rouvanjit Rawla, a Class VIII student who committed suicide after allegedly being “humiliated and caned” at his school La Martiniere for Boys, was a victim of corporal punishment. The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) has said this in its report on Rouvanjit’s death.

The NCPCR has recommended that legal action be taken against La Martiniere principal and teachers for Rouvanjit’s death and alleges rampant corporal punishment in the school. The report calls corporal punishment a crime against humanity that should not be taken lightly.

Kolkata police, on a complaint from Rouvanjit’s father, are investigating charges of abetment to suicide against the school principal and four teachers for Rouvanjit's death.

Ajay Rawla earlier this week told CNN-IBN a teacher slapped Rouvanjit for “whistling” but his classmates stood up and said that he was innocent and didn’t know how to whistle. “The teacher had to apologise to Rouvanjit in front of the whole class. Between that day and to Rouvanjit 's passing the teacher wouldn't miss out an opportunity to get after him,” said Rawla.

Rawla claimed that he had complained to the school board about Rouvanjit’s death in February but it instead “axed” two members who had suggested investigating the matter.
