BHUBANESWAR: Even as leaders of Opposition parties and non-government organisations (NGOs) rush to the Posco project site to oppose land acquisition for Posco’s ` 52,000-crore steel project near Paradip, the State Government has again reiterated its commitment for peaceful industrialisation of the State. The State Government is committed to set up the steel plant in a peaceful manner, Minister for Steel and Mines Raghunath Mohanty said and added that the project would bring the much needed development to the State. The task for the State Government has become all the more difficult with the visit of 10-member BJP team on Sunday. A Congress team had visited earlier. Both the Opposition parties demand stop to forcible land acquisition for the Posco plant. The Minister said that the land acquisition would be completed with the help and consent of the people. He said land acquisition would be completed in Dhinkia and Gobindpur in a peaceful manner. Fear of the State Government using force for the land acquisition was also allayed. Mohanty said that 2,000 acres of land had already been acquired for the project. Out of the total 3,719 acres to be acquired for the plant, 2,958 acres are forest land and 608 acres revenue land. Only 152 acres of private land will be acquired, he said and added that 613 families will be displaced. As the project is the largest foreign direct investment (FDI) in the country, the Centre also wants the plant to come up, the Minister said and adding that the government also has its responsibility to set up the plant in a peaceful manner.
