A number of political leaders from parties like DMDK, PDK and Thamizhar Vazhvurimai Katchi made a beeline to the Salem General Hospital on Monday to visit auto driver T Vijayaraj, who attempted self-immolation protesting Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s visit to India. Dr Anbumani Ramadoss and Kolathur Mani paid a visit to him and went on record with a statement against the government for the incident. Leaders like Seeman and Nedumaran informed they were heading to Salem to see Vijayaraj whose condition was deteriorating.
Book Cases Against Sonia, Manmohan
Vijayaraj is said to have mentioned in his statement to the magistrate the names of Congress chief Sonia Gandhi and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh for their support to Rajapakse’s government, which had committed genocide of Tamils in Sri Lanka. His relatives and neighbours protested on the hospital premises. Led by Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi activists, they assembled near the Salem Collectorate and blocked the road. They demanded that the police book criminal cases against Sonia and Manmohan, claiming they were responsible for the self-immolation attempt.
Deputy Commissioner of Police A G Babu pacified them by pointing out that the contents of Vijayaraj’s statement were not known to them and cases will be booked only after the judicial report was released. Following this the crowd moved back to the GH.
