CHENNAI: Contrary to popular opinion that communities classified as Other Backward Classes (OBCs) are the oppressors of Scheduled Castes in Tamil Nadu, the sixth all India general conference organised by the All India LIC OBC Employees Welfare Association on Sunday proved to be a trendsetter for inclusive politics in the state.LIC employees from SC and OBC communities, who gathered from across the country for the one-day conference, expressed their solidarity in addressing problems they face within the Corporation and external threats like Foreign Direct Investment.National Commission for Backward Classes member S K Kharvendhan expressed surprise over the unity between OBC and SC/ST employees within the LIC. He told the gathering that they were behaving true to the words of Babasaheb Ambedkar, who emphasised on the unity of OBCs and SC/STs to fight against caste order. He also praised D Bharathidasan, general secretary, South Zone LIC SC/ST Employees’ Welfare Association, who was described by the union members as their ‘political guru’, for achieving this in the LIC.Commenting on their resolution against FDI in insurance sector, Bharathidas an said it was not just foreign investment but even investment from the domestic private companies in the insurance sector would affect the welfare of ordinary people. On All India LIC OBC Employees Welfare Association’s demand for the formation of a Parliamentary Committee for OBCs, Bharathidasan bluntly said that there was no power for National Commission for Backward Classes, which rendered it unable to even monitor the implementation of the 27 per cent job reservations and other OBC welfare issues. “Formation of the Parliamentary Committee for OBCs is the need of the hour,” he said.Taking this cue, DMK north Chennai MP TKS Elangovan said he would moblise the support of 270 MPs hailing from OBC communities to form the Parliamentary Committee for OBCs.
