Kollam: People living near the Puttingal Devi temple in Puruvoor have been asked not to drink water from the wells in the area as authorities fear that chemicals from firecrackers and human body parts of those whose perished in the blaze may have fallen into them. Health department officials are inspecting the wells for chemicals from firecrackers and body parts.
Till now 13 people have been arrested in connection with the temple tragedy which claimed at least 110 lives and injured over 350 others. Seven temple managing committee members are among the 13 arrested and it includes the President, Secretary and Treasurer of the temple managing committee.
Six employees of the contractors who managed the firecrackers have also been arrested. All the 13 accused have been booked for culpable homicide and under the Explosives Substances Act.
Meanwhile, the Kerala High Court will also hear a plea seeking a ban on cracker bursting and fireworks display in temple functions.
The accident at the 100-year-old Puttingal Devi Temple complex occurred during an unauthorised display of fireworks early Sunday morning after a spark from a firecracker fell on the storehouse containing crackers, triggering massive explosions.
