Jhabua: Madhya Pradesh Police has registered a case against Rajendra Kaswa, the owner of the building where explosives went off on Saturday in Jhabua in Madhya Pradesh killing at least 89 and leaving over a 100 injured.
A massive blast caused by mining explosives stored in a building had on Saturday ripped through a crowded area in Petlwad town. According to the police, gelatin rods and detonators used for mining were illegally kept near the local restaurant which went off, also setting off the LPG cylinders kept nearby.
The Madhya Pradesh government has ordered a judicial probe into the case. Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan termed the incident as tragic and announced compensation for the relatives of those deceased. Singh is visiting the site of tragedy on Sunday.
The blast had occurred around 8.30 AM, completely destroying at least two buildings-- one in which explosive material for digging wells was stored and an adjacent restaurant, and damaging several houses, officials said.
Police have sealed properties of Kasawa who has a licence to use explosive material for digging wells in rocky areas. Locals alleged that administration's carelessness was the result of such a tragedy. Sources say repeated complaints were made to the district magistrate regarding the conduct of illegal business from the area but no action was taken.
Congress, on the other hand, has cried foul and alleged that the government is trying to play down the incident and also demanding a detailed inquiry into the case. Party spokesperson Arun Yadav demanded compensation for the relatives of those dead to be increased to 5 lakh.
