In an attempt to integrate latest developments in various fields in its courses, the University of Madras has upgraded the curriculum of a number of post graduate and undergraduate degrees.
This has been done after wide deliberations with the industry as well as student bodies, which is perhaps a first in the history of the University.
Presenting the proposals before the Academic Council of the varsity on Saturday, Vice Chancellor G Thiruvasagam said some the existing courses in which the syllabi were revised included MSc Botany, MSc Mathematics, MA Economics, MA Business Economics and BSc Chemistry apart from those in the Commerce departments.
While it was convention that the courses are revised once in three years, sources said exemptions have been made as some of the fields have seen fast developments in the last few years.
Meanwhile, the meet saw heated arguments over a circular sent to affiliated colleges which disqualified teachers with an MSc IT degree from teaching Bsc Computer Science courses.
After appeals from the academia, the Vice Chancellor decided that the matter be referred to the Board of Studies with a request for positive consideration as it involved the occupation of many teachers. Till then, it was decided to maintain status quo that remained prior to the circular.
The meeting also saw members expressing their warm regards to Thiruvasagam, as it was the last such meeting of the council he would chair before leaving office of the Vice Chancellor in October.
Members of various teachers’ association recalled several innovative efforts the Vice Chancellor during his tenure and lauded him for the free education schemes he launched for the economically-backward students.
