Kolkata: Trinamool Congress leader Mamata Banerjee, whose hunger strike over the Singur issue has entered the 24th day, complained of chest pain on Wednesday and was immediately brought under medical care.
A doctor examined Mamata and collected her blood samples. She had been put on oxygen support on Tuesday after she developed breathing problems on the 23rd day of her fast. The Trinamool had been refusing to be treated by doctors sent by the state government in the past few days.
Her family doctors examined her at the Dharna Manch (at Dharamtala in the heart of the city) and decided to put her on oxygen as she complained of breathing troubles. She has been on a fast to protest against the West Bengal government's 'forcible' acquisition of farmland at Singur for Tata Motor's small car project.
Trinamool Congress general secretary Mukul Roy had expressed concern on Tuesday over Mamata's deteriorating health condition. Mamata was, however, said to be in good spirits and was continuing her fast. "Doctors are monitoring her condition," a party leader said.
Meanwhile, the NDA has decided to take the Singur issue to the President's court on Thursday. An NDA delegation is likely to call on President APJ Abdul Kalam and request him to intervene in the issue.
BJP President Rajnath Singh had met Mamata Banerjee at her makeshift dharna site on Tuesday and announced that she was "not alone in her fight against the acqusition of farmland. Entire BJP and the NDA stand beside her." The BJP president expressed concern about Mamata's health, saying her health was deteriorating minute by minute. "If anything happens to her, the entire nation will fix responsibility on Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee and his government," he said.
Mamata has turned down all requests, including ones by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacherjee and West Bengal Governor GK Gandhi to call off her fast as well as offers to sit for discussions with the state government.
