Mandsaur: The aggrieved families of the farmers who died in police firing in Mandsaur last year have agreed to meet Congress president Rahul Gandhi and attend his public meeting on Wednesday.
On the first anniversary of the police firing on farmers, Gandhi is holding a public meeting to pay tributes to the dead farmers in Mandsaur and would attend a condolence meet from 1 to 3 pm.
"Rahul Gandhi is coming to attend the farmers’ condolence meet so, it’s our duty to go and meet him. We have been invited in the programme,”Alka, mother of student Abhishek Patidar who died in the firing last year, told News18.
Speaking to News18 about Gandhi's visit, Abhishek’s father Dinesh Patidar said, "We hope Rahul Gandhi would do something to turn loss prone farming into a profitable venture."
The Patidars were in the news recently when district administration served a notice to Abhishek’s elder brother Madhusudan Patidar, asking him to ink a peace bond that he won’t take part in the farmers’ agitation this year and would maintain peace. However, after widespread outrage the notice was cancelled.
"All the families, who lost their sons, have agreed to meet our party president," said Congress MLA Jitu Patwari. "Gandhi’s sympathies are with the bereaved families. He had earlier promised to come back and he kept his word," he added.
Last year, Gandhi had tried to visit Mandsaur to meet the dead farmers’ families, but the administration, citing prohibitive orders imposed in the town, had prevented him from entering.
Five protesting Mandsaur farmers had died on the spot in police firing, while one of the farmers succumbed to injuries due to lathicharge.
