Mangaluru And Udupi May Submerge By 2040, Warns New Study

The sea levels are rising and the western coastal cities are reportedly at risk of getting submerged, as warned by scientists. Recently, a team of scientists from Bengaluru has conducted another research regarding this. According to their report, around 5 per cent of the land in Mangalore and Udupi could get submerged by the year 2040.

In recent years, the sea has significantly encroached on coastal areas, flooding homes near shore whenever it becomes turbulent. The sea is reportedly extending in size every year. This report has left the people residing in those areas in shock.

As per reports, this research was done by the Center for Study of Science, Technology and Policy, Bengaluru. The study highlights the dangers of climate change and human interference along the coastline. The scientist warned that rising sea levels can lead to flooding in several residential and agricultural areas. The final report was prepared by analysing past data on the rise in sea levels and current trends. This can lead to serious situations in the future.

Based on this report, senior scientist Dr K.S. Jayappa, Professor and Chairman of Mangalore University shared his insights with Local 18 about the potential risks. He said, “Breakwaters, barriers on beaches, buildings, and rock piles to prevent coastal erosion are changing the direction of the sea. The sea level is affecting the land much more than before. Areas like Ullal, Someshwara, Ucchila, and Sasihithlu of Mangalore can witness significant land loss in this area.” Hee further added that this issue should be taken seriously.

The study also indicates that similar changes could occur along the western coast of Dakshin Kannada, Udupi, Kerala, Goa and Maharashtra. More Than 10 per cent of the land in Mumbai, Pondicherry, and Tuticorin could be lost to the sea, according to the report. Overall, the report mentioned that natural disasters are occurring due to environmental imbalance, and failure to properly conserve the environment. If not taken seriously this can lead to inevitable situations.
