To tackle the drought conditions in Marathwada, Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has declared a comprehensive plan to enhance water availability in the region with the help of various NGOs, including Aamir Khan’s Paani Foundation.

This initiative focuses on desilting dams and fields to increase water storage capacity. By boosting storage, the overall water reserve will rise, ensuring better water management and utilisation. The directive also includes instructions to avoid using drinking water for construction purposes.

During a drought review meeting in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Shinde detailed the ongoing efforts, mentioning that 1,837 water tankers are currently operational, supplying water to 1,250 villages. Additional tankers will be deployed as needed, with local officials like Gramsevaks and Talathis responsible for communicating their requirements. The arrangement also includes provisions for fodder to support livestock.

Shinde emphasised the importance of maintaining water quality and cleanliness. Previously, funds were allocated through the DPC to grow fodder, resulting in sufficient stock within the district. He reassured that despite outstanding water bills, supply schemes would not be halted, and measures are being taken to address the decline in groundwater levels.

The Chief Minister also warned against the sale of fake seeds and fertilizers, asserting that violators will face strict legal action, including imprisonment. The government will conduct surveys and inspections to prevent the distribution of counterfeit agricultural inputs, protecting farmers from potential losses. Furthermore, Shinde instructed officials to carry out damage assessments due to unseasonal weather and ensure prompt compensation for affected farmers.

The Marathwada region has been grappling with severe drought conditions, leading to a significant depletion of water resources. The government’s multi-faceted approach also involves promoting water conservation practices among farmers and encouraging the adoption of efficient irrigation techniques. Efforts are underway to implement rainwater harvesting systems and revitalize traditional water bodies to augment the water supply.

The administration is also considering long-term strategies such as interlinking rivers and enhancing watershed management to mitigate the impacts of drought and ensure sustainable water availability in Marathwada. These initiatives aim to create a resilient framework to tackle recurring droughts in the region.
