HYDERABAD: A mathematics teacher was assaulted by the parents and relatives of a student for beating the boy and making him do 200 sit-ups at the Bhashyam Public School in Attapur on Wednesday. The teacher, D Sudhakar, had allegedly forced Sai Pranay, a student of Class VIII, to do 200 sit-ups for not paying attention in class and failing to complete his work on Tuesday. Sai Pranay, whose legs were swollen as a result, complained to his parents.Finding their son struggling to walk, his parents, along with their relatives, landed at the school in the morning and took Sudhakar to task. As the arguments picked up, they thrashed him and made him do sit-ups before police arrived and pacified them.“The parents came to us this morning with the complaint that their son was unable to walk due to the punishment the teacher had subjected him to. We have taken immediate action by dismissing the teacher,” said principal of the school, Vasuki. However, initially, the school administration denied the incident when City Express contacted them. By afternoon, though, they changed their version and sent the teacher packing. Rajendranagar police inspector S Jayaram said no case had been registered as the parents did not lodge a complaint against the teacher after the school management took action. “The boy had bruises on his body,” he confirmed.Earlier this year, the State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) had issued a directive to district and mandal educational officers to curb the incidence of corporal punishment across the state. The order was issued following the alarming rise in number of complaints against educators for physically hurting students in the name of disciplining them.Despite the SHRC intervention, the incidence of corporal punishment has been on the rise, particularly in private schools in the twin cities.
