Mayawati announces Rs 1 lakh compensation
Seven people including five jawans were killed in a fidayeen attack.

New Delhi: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister, Mayawati swung into action on the very first day of the year, announcing a compensation of Rs 1 lakh for the kin of those who died in the attack on a CRPF camp on Tuesday morning.

"My government will pay a compensation of one lakh rupees to the family of those killed. High ranking police officials have been directed to reach the spot immediately. I myself will be visiting Rampur," she said.

Senior police officials say that militants armed with AK-47 and grenades attacked the camp at around 2:30 in the morning.

Seven people including five jawans were killed in a fidayeen attack at a CRPF camp in Rampur. Six jawans have also been injured in the incident.

Mayawati called the attack an act of cowardice. The police has been alerted and the entire area has been sealed off and combing operations are on to try and nab the terrorists.

She also refused to accept the fact that the failure was on the part of her government. She said that her government had already alerted the CRPF camp officials and that failure, if any, to prevent the attack was on the CRPF's part.

Stressing the need for Centre's help in dealing with the rising cases of terrorism in Uttar Pradesh, Mayawati requested the Centre to work together in countering the challenge.

Taking a dig at the Central Government, the Chief Minister said the terrorists influx was not a recent event as "international borders of the country are unsafe and terrorists have already made inroads in different parts of the country."
