CHENNAI: Construction of new buildings at the 97-year-old Communicable Diseases Hospital (CDH) in Tondiarpet is progressing well and the new facility is expected to be ready for occupation by September this year. Briefing reporters after inspecting the ongoing work here, Mayor M Subramanian said, “The new facility is coming up inside the CDH’s 14-acre space with a built up area of 1.10 lakh sqft.”Being constructed at an estimated cost of Rs 18 crore, the new buildings will house a block each for Acute Diarrhoeal Disorders (ADD), air-borne infections and fever, besides separate blocks for administration, kitchen, mortuary and laundry. Besides the dedicated blocks, the new buildings will also house separate facilities for communicable diseases such as swine flu, smallpox, plague, cholera and chikungunya, Subramanian added.Though the project was estimated at Rs 13.53 crores when the foundation stone was laid way back in August 2009 by the then Deputy Chief Minister MK Stalin, the cost has been later revised by the civic body due to inclusion of new facilities, including an outpatient block and a park along the hospital.Though the work for the new facility began in November 2009 with a deadline of 18 months, completion has been delayed by a few more months after the additional facilities were included in the plan. Now, the entire set of facilities is expected to be completed by September.Once the facility is put to use, people living in North Chennai, as well as from neighbouring Andhra Pradesh, will be benefited to a great extent. Besides civic officials and local elected representatives, Corporation Health Officer, P Kugananthan accompanied the Mayor during the inspection.
