New Delhi: MCD sealing units are set to hit the roads of the capital on Wednesday to target the unauthorised commercial units as per the apex court order. The Supreme Court last week asked the civic body to restart the sealing drive.
The MCD has already written to Delhi Police asking it to provide adequate security for its sealing squads, comprising officials of the civic body as well as the water and power departments.
On Wednesday, action will be taken against those shops which are operating out of the upper floors of residential buildings on 573 roads notified for mixed land use in Master Plan for Delhi 2021. These roads are spread over 11 out of the 12 zones under the civic body.
The Narela Zone will be the only area which would be left out as there were no roads notified for mixed land use. The MPD has allowed commercial activities on the ground floor of buildings on the roads notified for mixed land use.
"We will first target illegal shops operating out of buildings on stretches notified for mixed land use," an MCD spokesman said.
An apex court-appointed monitoring committee member, however, said directions as to which roads are to be targeted would be given only on Wednesday morning. The sealing squads will be back in action after a gap of around two months targeting the unauthorised commercial units.
The move is likely to give election blues to the ruling Congress a week ahead of the municipal elections. The SC had earlier passed strictures on the civic body for approaching the Election Commission on re-starting the sealing drive.
