PALAKKAD: The road blockade on the national highway on the Tamil Nadu side of the border staged by the MDMK brought traffic to a halt troubling people on their way to Coimbatore.The MDMK blocked the roads at six places in Coimbatore sharing borders with Palakkad. Both KSRTC and the Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation did not operate services. Even private buses which operated to Walayar did not have many passengers as there were no connection services to Coimbatore. “The KSRTC bus services did not operate on Wednesday owing to the MDMK blockade.The KSRTC authorities had insisted that the buses should operate to Coimbatore and not up to Walayar. However, the unions said that they were not willing to run buses to Coimbatore,” KSRTC District Transport Officer Vijayakumar said.“A meeting involving the District Collector, the Superintendent of Police, MLA and the representatives of unions will be held either on Thursday or Friday.A decision on conducting services to Coimbatore will be taken at the meeting,” Vijayakumar said.Therefore, in all probability there will be no services on Thursday morning also.Roads were blocked at Chavadi from where there is a diversion to Velanthavalam here.Roads were also blocked at Aanakatti, Gopalapuram, Valainthamaram and Nadupunni. Meanwhile, there was heavy rush on trains to Coimbatore.The shops on the Walayar dam premises and Chandrapuram areas were closed.There were long queues of vehicles at the Walayar outcheckpost owing to the blockade. The vehicles were unable to move towards Coimbatore and were stranded at Walayar. The revenue from special permits provided to vehicles going to the neighbouring states at the Regional Transport Office checkpost in Walayar decreased from Rs 2,500 to Rs 500 as only a few vehicles crossed the inter-state border,the officials at the RTO checkpost said.TRAFFIC DISRUPTED AT ARYANKAVUTHENMALA: The traffic along the Aryankavu and Thenkasi stretch was disrupted for over two hours following the siege laid by the MDMK activists at Puliyara checkpost near Aryankavu.MDMK general secretary Nanjil Sampath inaugurated the siege.Police force in full strength was deployed at both sides and the police stopped vehicles from Kerala side at Aryankavu, while those from Tamil Nadu side were held at Thenkasi area.The vehicular traffic resumed after the activists were arrested and removed from the area by 1 p.m.
