Kolkata: Former Minister of State for External Affairs Shashi Tharoor on Wednesday said he got a hostile reception from the country's mainstream media for his tweets on several issues.
Tharoor, the most active political personality on Twitter in the country, said, "I had gone for Twitter since time was limited to me. But there is a danger in Twitter because of the 140-character limit within which one has to express properly."
Citing an instance, Tharoor, the Congress MP, said BJP leader Sushma Swaraj had also faced a similar predicament due to the character limit for her certain comments.
"Almost in all cases, the controversies have been baseless," he said at an interactive session organised by the Advertising Club of Calcutta.
Tharoor said the relation between media and social networking would have to be refined in the country.
"I began tweeting on an informal note. But I found the humour intended does not translate itself properly," he noted.
Vice-president of Trinamool Congress Derek O'Brien said that social networking sites were being increasingly used by the politicians for spreading messages.
