CHENNAI:  The suburban police nabbed 14 persons for cheating and extracting money from students and parents on the promise of getting medical seats at a popular college in Porur. The men, most of them being graduates, belonged to two groups and were arrested in different raids on Thursday and Friday.Ebenezer (26), had stated in his complaint that a group of persons promised him a seat for `50 lakh and had extracted from him an advance amount of `50,000. He neither got a seat nor his money back. Based on his plaint, Krishnan (57), Nagoor Basha (24), Murali (42), Sivasathyaraja (39), Suresh (29), Ajith (28) and Srinivasan (48) of Chennai were arrested. A similar complaint was filed by Anandapadmanabhan (36) of Chennai, who was cheated by another gang for an advance amount of `20,000 while he tried to get a seat in the same college for his relative. The gang members Sathya Narayanan (30), Alangaramuthu (30), Gnanaveera Rajaguru (25), Varun (25), Sathish Kanna (23), Krishna Murali (24) and Ashok Kumar (21), were also arrested. Surprisingly, many of the accused turned out to be graduates working in private companies. A police official said  these men would roam inside college campuses scouting for parents of candidates trying to get medical seats for their wards. “Once a person in the group gets hold of a parent, he would inform the others over phone. The gang would deal only with the parents and not meet the candidates. The parents, in their desperation for a seat for their wards in a reputed institute, become easy prey to such men.” Duo Held for Harassing WomenTwo men, including a college student, were arrested on charges of harassing a woman at  St Thomas Mount on Saturday.Police said, Ajay Ranjith (18) of Tirunelveli and his friend Saravanan (18) of Alandur were arrested for making lewd comments on a 21-year-old woman, who was walking by near the Alandur subway. Police said Latha (21), who was walking back home  from St Thomas Mount Railway Station, was crossing the Alandur subway when the two men passed obscene comments.
