The condition of Amoebic encephalitis is reported to have claimed a number of lives in the district of Kozhikode, Kerala. Now, Local18 has reported on a life-saving drug that has been imported from Germany, which has shown signs of recovery in a young patient. As per the reports, in the last one and a half months, the Amoebic encephalitis condition has taken the lives of three children. To combat the disease, which is caused by an organism called Naegleria fowleri or the brain-eating amoeba, an antidote called Miltefoscin was brought in from Germany. The medicine was administered to a young boy, reported to be infected with the condition. According to Local18, he showed progress through its treatment and is showing a positive response. Another young boy, who was suspected to be suffering from the condition was given the medicine, which reportedly kept the amoebic fever at bay. He was kept under observation at Medical College Hospital.
The unfortunate deaths of 12-year-old Mridul from Farokh, 13-year-old Dakshina from Kannur and 5-year-old Fadwa from Malappuram, has caused fear among the locals of the Kozhikode district. According to the information, the ‘brain eating amoeba’ thrives in environments like lakes, hot springs and stagnant water, and enters the body through the nose. As per the reports, it has even been found in unmanaged swimming pools, surf parks and other recreational areas.
The organism causes Primary Amoebic Meningoencephalitis (PAM), after entering the body through the nose and moving to the brain. The first symptoms of the disease can appear between the first and the twelfth day of the infection. Most commonly they appear within five days. It includes the conditions of headache, fever, nausea or vomiting. While some of its severe symptoms are hallucinations, seizures, confusion and even comatose. It can lead to death in less than a month.
