After the COVID-19 pandemic, many people have resorted to organic farming. People have been making a living for themselves by growing different crops in their native regions. One such farmer who has resorted to organic farming is Thomas Joseph from Pampadumpara in the Idukki district of Kerala. Thomas has been popular in his area for producing thousands of crops through organic farming. The excellent yield achieved without destroying nature or harming the soil is not only an example and inspiration for other farmers but also brings everyone one step closer to the path of non-toxic food. He has been producing cardamom in the fields naturally. He has found a unique way to approach the process.
To pursue cardamom farming, Thomas Joseph cultivates cardamom on 15 acres of land using only organic manure. While most farmers use chemical fertilisers, he uses bone meal produced by a Japanese company. Farmers around his area have been impressed by his organic way of growing cardamom. Cardamom production is done at a high cost, but its value in the market has been declining, forcing farmers to shift to other crops. Thomas has found a way to produce them organically. But this is not the only farming that is done by him.
Thomas Joseph has also succeeded in modern fish farming. So far, he has set up seven fish farming units with a water capacity of 10,000 litres. He has reared 2500 fish in each unit. He mainly rears tilapia fish. It has been found that he started the cardamom cultivation and fish farming unit during COVID-19. It has been found that the first hatchery in the district was started under Thomas’ leadership to supply fish to the government. This is an initiative that is being run by only a few people in the state.
