BHUBANESWAR: The Congress, on Friday, announced that 30 per cent of its candidates in the next Assembly and Lok Sabha elections in Orissa would be youths. “The party will provide 30 per cent of tickets in Orissa to young men and women for the next Assembly and Lok Sabha polls,” Orissa in-charge of the party Jagdish Tytler told mediapersons here after launching a membership drive by the Youth Congress in Cuttack. The Congress leader, however, said the Youth Congress should provide capable candidates, which depends on the success of the membership drive. Stating that the youths must be capable, dynamic and energetic with leadership qualities to secure nomination, Tytler said the Congress would be able to take on the ruling BJD in the State if the Gen-Y came to the forefront of politics. He said the Congress would have to encourage the youths when 70 per cent of the population is below 30 years. AICC general secretary Rahul Gandhi is also likely to visit the State shortly for a road show to bolster the party’s prospects and attract more youngsters, he said. All India Youth Congress president Rajiv Satav said the party would follow democratic method for electing office-bearers from grass-roots to the State level. Unlike in the past, there will be no district or block committees of the organisation. Election will be held for booth, assembly, Lok Sabha and state level committees, he said adding that two years back a similar drive was launched in Punjab. Satav said there would be membership drive in all booths of the State. He said that if there was no membership from a booth, there will be no committee. Election will be completed after the membership drive. Voter list will be published with identity cards, he said and added that each of the Youth Congress members will get an I-card. There will be performance measurement system for the enrolled members, he said and added that 30 per cent tickets in panchayat polls next year would be given to YC members.
