Mumbai: Maharashtra Transport Minister Surupsingh Naik, who has been sentenced to a month's imprisonment for contempt of court, on Friday night resigned from the Cabinet.
Naik faxed his resignation to the Chief Minister's office, official sources said. Naik arrived in Mumbai from Delhi on Friday after the Supreme Court on Friday rejected his mercy petition.
Naik's resignation has been forwarded to Governor S M Krishna, sources said. Naik and former Forest Secretary Ashok Khot were sentenced for flouting the Supreme Court's 1997 order not allowing sawmills to operate in Mharashtra.
Naik and Khot on Thursday apporached the court, seeking a review of the order on the grounds that they had not violated the order willfully and the sentence was too harsh.
