New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be on a two-day visit to Russia on Wednesday to attend the 16th India-Russia Annual Summit. Major agreements in the defence, economy and nuclear sector are expected to be inked.
A big boost to Modi's 'Make In India' in defence is expected as a deal on the joint-production of 200 Kamov-226T helicopters may be the highlight. India is also likely to buy five S-400 Defence Missile Systems.
On the nuclear energy front, a deal is expected on the fifth and sixth units of the Kudankulam nuclear reactors. India will also offer a site in Andhra Pradesh to Russia for a nuclear plant. The two countries are likely to sign an agreement for the two units with provisions for involvement of India's private sector in the project including in supply of various components.
Russia has been a key partner of India in the civil nuclear energy sector. In the last summit between Modi and Putin, it was decided that Russia will build at least 12 nuclear reactors in India by 2035.
To give trade a push, a free trade agreement might be signed. An agreement on enhancing cooperation in the diamond industry is also expected to be inked. An 18-member business delegation will take part in an interactive session in Russia during Modi's visit to Moscow.
A 34-member strong delegation from Russia and President Vladimir Putin are expected to take part in the session.
This is Modi's second visit to Russia after assuming office in May 2014.
During his return, Modi is likely to make a stopover at Kabul on December 25 and inaugurate the new building of the Afghan Parliament constructed by India at a cost of about $90 million.
