HYDERABAD: The committee headed by former chief secretary Mohan Kanda, that went into the circumstances that led to the farmers in the coastal areas declaring a crop holiday for kharif this year, has made several recommendations to avert such a situation in future in its report submitted to chief minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy here on Monday.Soon after receiving the recommendations, higher officials said the government would soon come up with an action plan to help farmers basing on the report.The Mohan Kanda Committee was constituted by the state government about a month ago following declaration of a crop holiday by farmers in coastal Andhra and a few districts in Telangana. The farmers in Konaseema in East Godavari district are the first to declare suspension of agricultural operations in 43,087 hectares due to various problems like lack of fertilisers, seeds and subsidies. The farmers from other districts followed suit demanding enhancement of input subsidy apart from providing several other incentives.The committee has toured the affected districts extensively over the past one month and is learnt to have identified the circumstances that led the farmers to declare a crop holiday. They obtained the views and recommendations of farmers and also various organisations of farmers.Mohan Kanda, the retired IAS officer who is currently heading the Steering Committee on Agriculture in the Planning Commission, has proposed several measures for prevention of a similar situation in other areas of the state.
