The Mumbai court has ordered the Thane jail authorities to explain what went wrong.

Mumbai: One of the accused in the Mumbai gangrape case, Siraj ur Rahman, has gone untraceable with the authorities unaware of where he is. The Thane jail authorities have told court that they don't have the custody of Rahman.

The Mumbai Police Crime Branch has also said that it does not have any record as to where exactly Rahman is. The Mumbai court has ordered the Thane jail authorities to explain what went wrong.

There is no clarity on whether Rahman is in some other jail or not. Rahman has been chargesheeted for the gangrape of a photojournalist at the Shakti Mills in Mumbai.

"There is confusion as to where rape accused Siraj ur Rahman is. The court has issued a notice to the Thane jail superintendent to come and explain the lapse," said public prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam.

Sources say it is likely that Rahman may even have escaped as he was not produced in court even on Monday while the three other accused in the case were produced.

This comes just days after Indian Mujahideen terrorist Afzal Usmani escaped from a Mumbai court.
