It was a pre-mature delivery but all five babies survived.

Mumbai: In the first case of its kind, a 24-year-old woman gave birth to five babies at a private hospital in Mumbai.

Sabeera Khan, a housewife from Mira Road, delivered male quintuplets at Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital in suburban Andheri in Mumbai.

“It is the first case of male quintuplets in India where all babies have survived. In earlier cases, not all the five babies have survived with some of them dying within hours,” head of Gynecologist department at the hospital, Dr Suchitra Pandit said.

The woman, who already has a 10-month-old baby boy, is doing well, she said, adding, “of the five babies, two are on ventilator and the remaining in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)”.

“It was a pre-mature delivery and there could have been some complications but we had a plan in place and were well prepared for it,” Pandit said.

Sabeera was happy that the operation was successful but wished that at least one of the five was a baby girl. Her husband Ubed, who runs a garment shop in Mira Road, was also happy.
