Shortkut-The Con Is On is a special film for many reasons. It is an Anil Kapoor production that comes after he won international acclaim with Slumdog Millionaire. It's got two of our most under-utilised actors - Arshad Warsi and Akshaye Khanna, letting their hair down in this mad comedy. Welcome director Anees Bazmee, who has delivered super successful comedies in the past, has written the film. And last but not the least, the gorgeous Amrita Rao has finally dropped her saree and the Vivah image - slipping gracefully into hot pants and bikini tops.
So, does Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy's music add to the fun and games one expects from this film? Since the film is set in Bollywood, most of the tracks are a part of film shoots going on in the movie's narrative. Which is why the score is more on the lines of what the trio had composed for Luck By Chance.
The album opens with a lively title track called Patli Gali. Shankar Mahadevan's singing further adds to the energy levels of the song. Arshad Warsi and Akshaye Khanna's antics should make this song quite a riot to watch on screen.
Kyun Hota Hai Dil Diwana is a fun duet by Shreya Ghosal and Rahman discovery Javed Ali. Paying a tribute to popular Bollywood cults, S-E-L keep it simple yet foot tapping. Without directly lifting any other tune S-E-L make subtle references to popular classics.
Sonu Nigam and Alka Yagnik take you back to the 90s in Kal Nau Baje which for some strange reason reminds you of the opening song of SRK-Juhi's Yes Boss? The tune is melodious, but takes a while to grow on you. Effective picturisation could do wonders for this song. S-E-L seem to have once again purposely gone in Nadeem-Shravan zone as a part of the film's theme.
The final track Marzee Mohabbat has a hip-hop meets qawalli beat to it. Despite its lavish arrangements the song doesn't quite make it. From S-E-L one expected better. After all these are the guys who gave us Kajrare. Still the trio deserve brownie points for keeping the soundtrack simple without resorting to any electronic gimmickry.
Verdict: Shortkut-The Con Is On is not a chartbuster album. But it's got simple, melodious, situational tracks that could catch on if the film clicks.
