Bhubaneswar: Armed naxalites laid siege to a police station located on the Jaypore-Malkangiri road at Baipariguda in Orissa for about two hours on Sunday night after forcing the police officers to vacate it.
They attacked the police station by throwing crude bombs in the premises.
Deputy Inspector General (Sunabedha range) Sanjeev Kumar Panda said over phone that no one was hurt on the police’s side.
He added that it was not clear if any weapon was looted from the armoury.
The naxalites attacked the police compound with atleast three bombs, Panda said.
About 70 naxalites, armed with weapons, initially drove out five police officers and later laid siege to the police station, police said.
Director General of Police Manmohan Praharaj said that a team of the elite anti-Naxal Special Operation Group (SOG) has been rushed to Baipariguda for combing operation in the entire belt.
It is close to Naxal-infested Malkangiri district in south Orissa.
Additional police forces were also rushed to Baipariguda from the district headquarter town of Koraput, about 25km from Baipariguda.
However, force movement to the police station was hampered as the naxals had put obstacles on roads by felling trees.
