Negligence: Newborn suffers serious burns

KOZHIKODE: In a shocking incident, a newborn baby at the Government Women and Children’s Hospital here suffered serious burns after the bulb of the incubator fell on the infant’s body.The baby suffered burns on her face, shoulder and chest. The unfortunate incident met with the daughter of the couple Mohammed Shafi and Sabira, hailing from Karuvanthuruthy,  Feroke.  The incident occurred hours after the birth of the baby on Saturday morning.The baby was later shifted to the intensive care unit of the Institute of Maternity and Child Health (IMCH), Kozhikode. Shafi alleged that the hospital authorities did not inform the incident on time and refused to show the baby.Additional District Medical Officer Dr A Appunny said that the baby was out of danger. He said that the Health Department has sought report from the authorities of the Government Women and Children’s Hospital, Kottaparambu, and action would be taken on the basis of the report.Kozhikode Town police station registered a case in connection with the incident following a complaint filed by Mohammed Shafi. Parents have also filed a complaint with the State Human Rights Commission.
