News briefs: Elephants destroy houses, crops in Jamshedpur
Six elephants wreaked havoc at Chalakbigha village adjoining Seraikela- Kharsawan district in the wee hours of Monday. The animals destroyed three houses, damaged crops, including aloe vera plants worth thousands of rupees, and critically injured a villager during the one-and-a-half hour rampage. The injured, identified as Badal Singh Sardar, has been admitted to a local hospital in Chandil block where his condition is stated to be serious. The herd, including a tusker, raided the village at about 2am when the people were in deep asleep. A few villagers woke up, hearing commotion in the nearby fields, and raised an alarm. However, they did not dare to come out, fearing that they might come in front of the rampaging elephants. Sardar was standing beside the closed door of his house when suddenly the herd attacked his house.

Chatra: One killed, 5 injured in road mishap

A student was killed and five others were injured when the auto-rickshaw they were travelling in turned turtle in Chatra town on Saturday. The auto driver allegedly lost control over the vehicle while talking on his mobilephone. While Saurabh Kumar died on the spot, Rushani Parveen and Md Rahbar were taken to RIMS, Ranchi, with serious injuries. All of them were students of Nazreth Vidya Niketan.

Ranchi-Dumka Intercity Express to ply daily from Sept 1

The Ranchi-Dumka Intercity Express which runs five days a week at present will run daily from September 1. Its timing has also been revised. It will depart from Ranchi at 9.25 pm and reach Dumka, via Dhanbad, at 6.45 am. From Dumka, it will start off at 6.45 pm and reach the capital at 4 am.

Daltonganj: Police nab 2 PLFI rebels, recover pistol, cartridges

Two PLFI rebels were arrested from Nadgad village of Panki on Saturday. Police claimed to have recovered a pistol and cartridges from them. The rebels, both share the same name, Sunil Mochi, were sent to jail. DSP Sunil Kumar said they were wanted in several cases lodged with different police stations in the district.

Ranchi: Rs 73-cr 'loot' in National Games 2011, says reports

The Vigilance Bureau has pointed out massive irregularities in finances and misrepresentation of actual requirements of sports equipment in the records of National Games in Jharkhand which was organised at the state capital, Ranchi, in February 2011. According to findings of the Vigilance Bureau which will be submitted to Sports Ministry in the coming days, Jharkhand Olympic Association and sports equipments supplying companies colluded to cause an estimated loss of at least Rs. 73 crore to the exchequer.
