RAJAHMUNDRY: In an attempt to ease the increasing vehicular traffic on the national highways in East Godavari district, National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has decided to upgrade 100 km stretch of the four-lane road between Rajahmundry and Tuni into six-lane.According to the information, the NHAI has sanctioned `640 crore for the works and initiated measures to acquire 100 acres for the project. With the rapid urbanisation and industrial growth, vehicular traffic is increasing day-by-day on the 140 km stretch of national highway in the district, on which about 45,000 vehicles are plying daily. The national highway passes through the Ravulapalem, Kadiyam, Rajahmundry, Rajanagaram, Gandepalli, Prattipadu, Jaggampeta and Tuni mandals in the district.As per the NHAI plans, the total project would be executed in two packages including 47 kms between Tuni and Dharmavaram, 53 kms between Dharmavaram and Rajahmumndry.The NHAI is also mulling over upgradation of the 112 km patch between Rajahmundry and Gundugolanu in West Godavari district. Officials also said that proposals were under consideration to develop 250 km stretch between Kakinada and Suryapeta into a four-lane road. The proposed four-lane track would pass through Samalkot, Anaparthi, Dwarapudi, Vemagiri, Rajahmundry, Kovvur, Pangidi, Koyyalagudem, Aswaraopeta, Surrapet and would accomodate about 20,000 vehicles on a daily basis.
