CHENNAI: As many as nine workers of the PMK were arrested for allegedly assaulting three persons at Villivakkam on Wednesday, even as the party alleged that the case was foisted on them by the police. In a press release here, the Villivakkam police claimed that a group of persons, including Dinesh Kumar (30) and his friends Muthuraman (31) and Devan (32), attacked a person, Hamid at his house in SIDCO Nagar with sticks and iron rods on Tuesday night. According to them, the attack was the result of previous enmity between Hamid and Dinesh Kumar over an eve-teasing issue. Hamid’s friends Mohammed and Solai Selvam, who came to his rescue, were also hurt and all three were admitted to the hospital. On the basis of a plaint lodged by Hamid, Devan, Muthuraman, Dinesh Kumar, Venkatesh, David, Ramesh, Shanker, Kumaran and Sultan, all PMK members, were arrested and produced before the XIII Metropolitan Magistrate Court and later remanded. The cops claimed that Muthuraman, who was the party’s Central Chennai district secretary, was wanted in a case of assault against one Kumar. He also assaulted another person, Madasami last year and the case was pending, they added. Denying the charges, PMK ex-MP A K Moorthy submitted a plea to the CoP, alleging that the police had foisted false cases.  He said that Devan’s wife Veda was subjected to eve-teasing and they went to Hamid’s house to question him on the issue, when they were attacked. When they were arrested, Muthuraman questioned the police action and then he too was arrested. He urged that the cops involved be suspended.
