The German government has asked NATO to provide surveillance planes to monitor the skies during the tournament.

Taormina: German defence minister Franz Josef Jung says the armed forces won't be used to aid security during the World Cup.

Jung said all security measures other than the army will be used for the June 9-July 9 tournament.

"I've said clearly that we will act along the lines of our constitution," Jung said on Thursday at a NATO meeting.

Germany's Constitution after 1945 prohibits the use of armed forces for domestic security.

The German government has asked NATO to provide surveillance planes to monitor the skies during the tournament.

Major sporting events, including the Winter Olympics in Turin, often use the planes.
